ADD / ADHD

"The studies reviewed here indicate that neurofeedback treatment is a superior alternative to stimulant therapy in ADHD. It is usually curative of ADHD. It is extremely safe... In truth, it is a revolutionary approach to managing ADHD. We urgently need to educate our neurological, psychiatric, and pediatric colleagues about the advantages of Neurofeedback."

Proven help for Adult & Teenage ADD / ADHD
Neurofeedback training is a scientifically established, drug-free treatment that can reduce or eliminate symptoms of attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. Neurofeedback has produced significant improvement in core ADD / ADHD symptoms in 75% of ADD / ADHD cases treated in scientific studies, and in research with attention issues it has boosted performance on IQ tests by an average of 10 points. It is cost effective, painless, non-invasive, safe, with little or no side effects. By addressing and improving brainwave functioning, neurofeedback training creates positive and lasting changes in adults and children.

Why haven’t I heard of this before?
Historically, neurofeedback training for ADD / ADHD has had marginal support from the professional community. While neurofeedback trainers had demonstrated a long tradition of clinical success with attention issues, and uncontrolled studies had shown success, critics rightly held that strict empirical research had not been done to prove Its effectiveness. Over the past decade, these rigorous standards have been met, and this criticism is no longer valid.  The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry’s ranking of research support for psychosocial treatments awarded NFBT the highest level of evidence-based support for the treatment of ADD / ADHD [PracticeWise, 2012]. Neurofeedback training is becoming mainstream as physicians, psychologists, and counselors around the world are now including it in their practices. For more on this, see Research and Other Reading.

Neurofeedback Training and Medications
Medications can be effective in addressing the symptoms of ADD / ADHD, but they cease to help once they have left the blood stream, and do little to address the complex of symptoms that accompany ADD / ADHD as they unfold over a lifetime. In contrast, neurofeedback training not only addresses the core symptoms, but can also improve the depression, anxiety, anger, communication, or sleep problems related to ADD / ADHD. Because of the unique way that it helps to regulate an imbalanced brain, the effects of neurofeedback training have held up in follow up studies ten years later. In contrast, medications are temporary, costly, and can have potential negative side effects. If there are any side effects from neurofeedback training, they are minimal, temporary, rare, and reversible.

What does it cost to treat ADD /ADHD with Neurofeedback Training?
Treatment is equivalent to what a few years of stimulant medication will cost. The significant difference is that the investment in neurofeedback training, by adjusting and regulating the beta/theta brainwave ratio, produces lasting results, demonstrating its cost effective benefit.

The Challenge of ADD / ADHD for Adults

Dr. Thomas Brown of Yale University School of Medicine summarized the following in Helpguide.org: Adults with ADD / ADHD have problems in six major areas of executive functioning:

Activation

  • difficulty getting started on projects

  • excessive disorganization & messiness

  • inability to prioritize tasks

  • underestimating the time needed to complete a task

Focus

  • inability to screen out distractions

  • zoning out during conversations

  • random skipping from topic to topic in conversation

  • reading works over and over to grasp meaning

Effort

  • difficulty sustaining effort over long periods of time

  • starting multiple tasks but difficulty completing any of them

  • missing deadlines

  • trouble going to sleep at night, and staying alert during the day

Emotion

  • easily bored

  • low tolerance for frustration and stress

  • unstable, unpredictable moods and quick temper

  • constant worrying

  • maintains an adversarial style to remain engaged

Memory

  • trouble remembering anything, even for a short time

  • doesn’t remember conversations

  • difficulty remembering appointments

  • loses, misplaces things

Action

  • difficulty delaying gratification

  • speaking without thinking

  • acting impulsively without considering consequences

  • jumping to conclusion

We all may have some of these symptoms to one degree or another. For a person with ADD / ADHD however, these are pervasive and chronic symptoms that significantly impact important aspects of their life. ADD / ADHD affects friendships, distances family members, complicates partner relationships, contributes to poor school performance, and threatens financial stability. It is often associated with and contributes to depression, anxiety, impaired anger control, substance abuse or dependence, and disordered eating.

By rebalancing and retraining the brain, neurofeedback training is an effective, safe, and drug-free treatment that addresses the primary and secondary symptoms of ADD / ADHD with lasting results.

The Challenge of ADD / ADHD for Teenagers
Improve your child’s life now…and for the future.
The implications of ADD / ADHD can negatively impact an entire life. ADD / ADHD can contribute to a higher likelihood of poor academic performance, social difficulty, increased vulnerability to substance abuse and alcoholism, failed marriages and friendships, chronic problems with paperwork or finances, and poor job success. Only five percent of people with ADD / ADHD graduate from college.

ADD / ADHD includes the core symptoms of poor impulse control, distractibility, and executive function deficits, but often occurs along with secondary symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, poor social skills, sleep disorders, and anger problems. This is a partial list.

ADD / ADHD has its positive side as well. It is a cognitive style that can include creativity, superior integrative capacity, great charm and energy, the ability to think outside of the box and to adapt to change. Some of our greatest visionaries and innovators have been people with ADD / ADHD.

Managing ADD / ADHD and Adolescence
Managing the negative aspects of ADD / ADHD becomes crucial for the “survival” of adolescence when they are amplified during the teenage years. Navigating the intense challenges of social development, academic pressure, peer pressure, dating, exposure to alcohol and drugs, and parent/teen stress is difficult under the best circumstances. During this stage of development, teenagers struggling with ADD / ADHD can become frustrated and demoralized by their inability to develop and manage the independence and responsible behavior demanded by both school and parents.

Neurofeedback Training Can Help
Successfully negotiating adolescence is critical to developing the skills, attitudes, and healthy sense of self that are needed to live a reasonably happy adult life. Neurofeedback training specifically targets the areas of the brain that produce the core symptoms associated with ADD / ADHD while rebalancing the brain and addressing the complex of other symptoms often accompanying ADD / ADHD. It is a highly successful treatment for ADD / ADHD, and provides safe and lasting results.

Choosing neurofeedback training could make an enormous difference in the entire life of your child, or grandchild. By investing in neurofeedback, you can help the adult your child will become.
